I spent a day at Ilha do Mel at the entrance of Paranaguá Bay. Ilha do Mel is a World Heritage site and I hope that my photos will give you an idea of how relaxed the place is.

I have been coming to the island every year to relax and enjoy the beach and nature’s tranquility. I stay away from weekends and holidays when young crowds descend on the island. In particular Encantadas can be rowdy during the summer holidays. Brasilia is a place where families go and therefore a quieter place.

This time I only visited the Encantadas. I always have a great day strolling through the Mar de Fora beach, have a swim in warm waters and finish the day with a nice meal in one of the seaside restaurants.

This year I found Encantadas a bit run down. The majority of the little shacks were dirty and the place in general needed to be tidy up. It may be because the beach season is over but it is not acceptable for a place with reputation for picturesque beach resorts, wild beaches, good surfing waves and scenic coastal walks.

Accessible only by boat, Ilha do Mel is traversed by sandy paths and has not a single car. The Encantadas cave, Farol das Conchas and Fortaleza Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres are some of the must see places.
