The Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo is an extension of the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. I think it is like a holiday place for the animals, to give them a break from the confined places of Taronga.
The Western Plain Zoo provides the animals with very large compounds resembling their natural habitats. The boundary fences are well designed and in most of the cases give to the visitors an impression of an open plain.
You can use your vehicle to travel around the Zoo or hire a buggy, which we did. We spent most of the morning in the zoo having done two laps of the circuit.
The zoo is well set up and there are many places for a family picnic or just relax. However, from reading the brochures we expected a place with more wildlife. Probably we assumed it would be the Australian equivalent to the Kruger Park in South Africa or the Etosha Pans in Namibia.
