From Bicheno we started our way back home. We planned to complete the 3,000 km in 5 days. On the third day we were in Canberra and our trip was going very well.
On the 4th day we left Canberra to Wollongong to see our friend Marion. We intend to stay a few hours with her and then by-pass Sydney and sleep somewhere between Sydney and Brisbane.
Again the trip was going so well that at 6:30 pm we were in Coffs Harbour, almost half way to Brisbane. We decided to have dinner at Coffs Harbour and then soldier on and reach Brisbane around mid night. Well we had no idea what was waiting for us from Kempsey onwards.
The rain was so heavy that several times we had to pull over and wait for the rain to subside so that we could see the road. The traffic was horrendous with a constant string of trucks travelling in opposite direction.
We learnt later on that due to weather the New England highway south bound traffic was being diverted to the Pacific Highway where we were travelling north bound. We made home around 3 in the morning exhausted after almost 1,500 km non stop.
