Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Cradle is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track, a magnificent 6 day walk that will take you through the heart of some of the finest mountain terrain.

In 1902 Gustav Weindorfer, an Austrian, emigrated to Australia built Waldheim lodge a primitive accommodation for him and his friends. Now a large commercial operation manages the Cradle Moutain Reserve.

Cradle Mountain was probably the place we visited the most while living in Tassie. The beauty of the place enchanted us and every year in the winter we would stay a few days in the log cabins relaxing by an open fire place, enjoying bush walking in the snow and other activities such as abseiling, mountaineering and snow plowing using the lids of the rubbish bins.

Our many visitors during those 10 years were introduced to Cradle Mountain and all of them loved it. This time we took Bruno to see Cradle Mountain and experienced one of the small walks around lake Dove.

Marakoopa Cave is a limestone cave in Mole Creek Karst national park, north west Tasmania and one of over 300 known caves and sinkholes in the area. Marakoopa Cave features two underground streams, a large display of glow-worms, large caverns, rim pools, reflections and shawl and flowstone features.

Marakoopa is a Tasmanian Aboriginal word meaning handsome. We spent the night at Mole Creek and visited the cave in the morning. Although a small cave it is well presented and beautiful.
