A must when in Swakopmund is to explore the Kuiseb Delta, near Walvis Bay. The prehistoric Kuiseb River is older than the Namib Desert (the oldest desert in the world).
I have done the The Historian Tour of the Kuiseb Delta 3 times which shows how much I liked it. During 4 hours we traveled the Kuiseb Delta and discovered that a desert is not as deserted as we think.
We saw fruit (Nara and the Sirub) and met some of its inhabitants: insects and lizards. We learnt how the dunes move and how the plants ride the “sand wave”. The most interesting part of the tour, apart from the trill of riding a bike on the dunes, is to explore the petrified tracks of almost all the present animals of Namibia ( Elephant, rhino, buffalo, eland, oryx, kudu, giraffe, baboon, cheetah, steenbok) and humans (Topnaars the ancient local inhabitants claiming to be a tribe of the Khoi-Khoin).
The guide is very knowledgeable in the history of the desert and introduces it to you in a very interesting and pleasant way. Filomena never had driven a 4 wheel bike but after a few minutes became an expert and rode the dunes like a pro.
