The Shot Tower – the old method of making shot (lead balls to load the rifles) was to drop molten lead from the top of the tower and collect the cooled drops in a vat full of water on the bottom of the tower. The effect of the gravity would turn the lead drops in perfect balls and the time they took to drop from the top to the bottom was sufficient to cool them to a point where they did not deform when they hit the water at the bottom of the tower.
