These type of towers were used to make lead shot used in guns and were called Shot Towers. The molten lead was dropped from the top and allowed to free fall down the tower. When the lead droplets reached the bottom, they were already solid enough to stand a dive in a pool of cold water.
Today the Melbourne shot tower is incorporated in the Daimaru Shopping Centre and is a major tourist attraction. A hot air balloon and an old plane hang from the structure adding colour to an already impressive landmark.
